Our Agora crew at the San Xavier Mission near Tucson. |
Day 2 started off with some changes. Our friend, Rev. John, got stuck in travel as he tried to return from a professional trip, so unfortunately, we did not get to meet him to learn about his founding of the sanctuary movement. Instead, we used our morning for two last-minute but still neat opportunities: first, we visited the San Xavier del Bac Mission, a centuries-old mission church outside Tucson with roots in Spanish, Native American, Jesuit, Franciscan, and Catholic traditions; second, we made a quick visit to the Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona, whose exhibits included an in-depth look at the different Native American tribes of the region. In the afternoon, we joined Laura Martinez, of Tucson Samaritans, who oriented us and led us in observing the trial proceedings of Operation Streamline, a fast-paced, controversial sentencing system for those detained for illegal entry. Our time in the courtroom included a long, spontaneous discussion with one of the magistrate judges for the program, who spoke candidly to us about our justice and political systems.
Back home, Mr. M's van made burgers and fries for the group. After dinner, we had a good wrap-up conversation. To cap the day, we played a few rousing rounds of a group role-playing game to help us unwind.
